The D2 Darwin Data Centre is a landmark data centre construction project that will strengthen the Northern Territory’s digital infrastructure and support the region’s growing innovation ecosystem.
Located close to Darwin’s CBD and Charles Darwin University’s campus, NEXTDC’s D2 Darwin Data Centre is a seven-level facility designed to meet the Territory’s increasing demand for secure, reliable digital services.
The facility includes:
D2 forms a key part of the Northern Territory’s Digital Territory Strategy, helping local businesses, government and education providers access world-class digital infrastructure within the region.
Kapitol has a strong track record delivering data centre construction projects for NEXTDC, including major facilities such as M2 and M3 in Melbourne. Our team brings deep experience in:
This combination allows us to deliver sophisticated data centre construction outcomes while maintaining program, quality and safety standards in challenging environments.
Kapitol’s focus on safety and performance has been recognised at the Master Builders Australia National Excellence Awards, where we received the National Safety Award for our work on NEXTDC’s M2 Melbourne expansion.
This achievement reflects our ability to manage high-risk, live environments while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality and stakeholder communication – critical for major data centre construction projects.
We manage heat-related safety risks for our workers through a combination of cooling infrastructure and proactive hydration measures. Ice machines are installed on site to ensure constant access to ice for cold water, while slushie machines (ice ingestion) are provided to help rapidly reduce core body temperature during extreme heat conditions. In addition, chilled shower facilities are available to allow workers to cool down quickly during breaks. Together, these controls help reduce the risk of heat stress, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related injuries, supporting a safer working environment in high-temperature conditions.
We also partnered with MATES in Construction to support worker wellbeing through regular toolbox talks focused on mental health awareness, early intervention, and peer support. These sessions help reduce stigma around mental health, encourage workers to look out for their mates, and provide clear pathways to support services if someone is struggling. By combining physical heat management controls with strong mental health initiatives, we promote a safer and more supportive work environment across site.
The D2 Darwin Data Centre is being delivered in collaboration with a specialist project team, including:
